The iPhone 2.1 software included an update that allows web applications to run in full-screen mode on the iPhone or iPod Touch. This makes a web app almost indistinguishable from a native app because there is no Safari container around it.

For this to work, you have to save the app to your home screen (which you can do with two clicks while using Safari). Launching this app from its newly created icon on your screen would open it up without bringing up elements like the Safari toolbar — though it would still be Safari running the app.

Many native applications currently have such functionality — running the web without loading the full version of Safari. This allows for a more seamless transition from app to web within applications.

Instructions to convert the Physics directory web page into a full-screen native app on the iPhone:

* Load the Directory search page in Safari on your iPhone
* Hit the "+" button at the base of the Safari app
* Select "Add to Home Screen"
* Save the App to the Home Screen
* Tap the icon that was just saved to your Home Screen
* The App should load in full screen without the Safari wrapper.

Once the app is loaded in full-screen, it behaves just like a native app acquired from the App Store, though it may perform slightly slower as all the resources and interface elements are being downloaded in real-time over the Internet.

You can even pull the interface down like a native app without the Safari interface coming into play.
